DANGEROUS drivers are driving the wrong way around a traffic island in a small residential street, claim angry councillors.

The drivers are driving the wrong way around the traffic island in Guernsey Gardens, Wickford and a councillors said it is an accident waiting to happen.

Michael Mowe, Conservative councillor for Wickford North, said it has been an ongoing issue for years.

He added: “It seems to be happening during at evening or early in the morning.

“Residents living in Guernsey Gardens spoke to me about the problem about two years ago and I went to investigate what was going on with the issue.

“I have seen all sorts of vehicles going the wrong way around the island in the road.

“I have seen cars, taxis, and even vans and lorries doing this and it is not just the odd occasion, it’s becoming very regular.”

Mr Mowe added that he is concerned for the safety of other drivers and even pedestrians who may not be looking for vehicles travelling the wrong way along the road.

He said: “I have written to Essex County Council about the issue but nothing has been done about the problem.

“I would like to see one way signs around the traffic island and no entry signs around the wrong way to stop people travelling the wrong way.

“I also think that we should have some cameras there to catch these people who are doing this.”

There have been other problems in the road with residents campaigning about bus routes ruining their street.

The Echo reported on Wednesday, August 17 how residents living in Guernsey Gardens are campaigning as there are two many bus services using the road.

Residents living in Guernsey Gardens, claim that problems with the buses have come about after decision was taken to add two permanent bus stops to their road in April.

Following this decision buses which previously travelled along Swan Lane, Wickford now travel down the smaller Guernsey Gardens, with residents claiming ten services now use the road.

Peter Holliman, Wickford Independents councillor for Wickford North, said the situation is an accident waiting to happen.

He added: “This is so dangerous and something needs to be done.

“I have been down the road and seen it for myself and it is terrible what these drivers are doing.

“I understand that the county council made the traffic island wider to help the buses services.

“The problem is that in doing so the county council has encouraged these drivers to drive on the wrong side of the road.”

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “We are not aware of any reported issues along this stretch of road, but are happy to investigate.”
