TWO bar workers have been hailed as heroes for coming to the rescue of a man who was stabbed in a frenzied town centre attack.

Georgia Curtis, 18, and David Goates, 21, ran out from behind the bar at East Coast Social, in London Road, Southend, when a 34-year-old man collapsed outside at about 11.15pm on Sunday.

He was bleeding heavily after being stabbed several times in the legs, back and buttocks.

The man was taken to Royal London Hospital in a serious condition and remained there yesterday in what police described as a “serious but stable” condition.

Detectives are still hunting for his attacker.

A customer at the time, who asked not to be named, said the pair had “probably saved the man’s life”.

She said: “I just want them to have recognition, they didn’t hesitate and just rushed straight out there.”

Speaking to the Echo, Miss Curtis, of St Leonard’s Road, said she had to throw away her uniform after it was soaked in the man’s blood.

She added: “We were just working a normal Sunday shift. A man ran in and said someone had been stabbed.

“Instinct sort of kicked in to get towels and go outside and help out.

“It wasn’t until we were out there that we realised how many wounds he had. When we got out there we found the obvious ones.

“There was quite a bad one to his hand. He had a lot of blood coming from his thigh. He was saying there were other wounds and we were trying to find them.

“He was in a bit of a state. We were trying to keep him breathing and awake and get things out of him.

“We kept asking him what happened but he said he couldn’t tell us. He was asking for his girlfriend and that sort of kept him awake.

“I went on a first aid course about four years ago and this was the first time I’ve had to use it.”

Miss Curtis said she held towels to wounds on his back and hand while Mr Goates tended to those on his leg and backside.

Mr Goates, of Dalmatia Drive, said: “There was a lot of blood. He was kind of going in and out and we were talking to him.

“I think we were doing it for about ten or 15 minutes until the paramedics got there.”

The man is thought to have been attacked in Napier Road- close to the spot where 19-year-old Nico Ramsay was stabbed to death in February.

Police have not issued a description of the man’s attacker.
