A SCHOOL assembly was given a lively twist when a budding R&B singer put on a surprise performance.

More than 400 youngsters packed into the school hall at Belfairs Academy, in Highlands Boulevard, Leigh, expecting their teachers to lead the formal afternoon assembly as usual.

They were given a shock when J-Sol, a newcomer to the music scene, put on a live performance.

Pupils and staff alike – including headteacher Gregory Rodulfo – were on their feet dancing.

J-Sol, who is from Essex, has already made an impression on the industry – having been nominated for a Spirit of London Award for achievement through music. He was even invited to Downing Street to be congratulated by David Cameron.

Ross Williams, a senior college leader at Belfairs Academy, said: “The students had no idea what was coming, it was really fantastic. I had a call last week from Reprezent Radio and I wasn’t given much information, but I decided to go ahead with the event.

“The assembly had 400 students there and J-Sol put on an unbelievable performance. The students were up dancing, and so was I and the principle, it was great.

“After the performance the students were queuing up to get autographs and selfies with him. It was a real change because assemblies are usually quite a formal event.

“The station also sent a representative to talk about how it all started, how they have helped young artists from different backgrounds and are working alongside the NHS on mental health. Music is the best way to access young people and the work the station does is linked to mental health.

“It was great because a lot of our students are creative, into music and arts, so it was the perfect opportunity for them to see the success.

“At Belfairs we always try to bring external people in that will excite and encourage our students and show them different career opportunities.”

Reprezent Radio is a youth led radio station which gives young people from across the county opportunities to learn while fuelling their creative passions – unearthing the next generation of broadcasters and artists.

Kate Jaggers, from Reprezent Radio, said: “We hope we made a dreary Friday afternoon into a fun and inspiring day for the students to encourage them to get into music.

“We just wanted to let them know there is a wealth of opportunities out there and we are here to provide guidance. We also spoke to the students about different opportunities that are available to them.

“We have a roadshow where we visit schools to tell them about what we do and how they can get involved.”

Reprezent Radio held an event at the Palace Theatre, in London Road, Westcliff, yesterday which saw performances from Dapz On The Map and J-Sol.
