A BILLERICAY teenager has been handed six points on his driving licence after he admitted taking his dad’s car without consent.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with taking a Volkswagen Passat from Billericay on November 20 last year.

He further admitted driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

Basildon Youth Court heard yesterday how the teenager was caught by officers driving the car in Billericay after almost causing a collision with a police car.

Barry Hargreaves, prosecuting, said: “The way the Volkswagen was driving caused the police vehicle to break to prevent a collision.

“They stopped the car and spoke to the driver, who said the car was his father’s and he didn’t have permission to take it.”

Mark Savage, mitigating, said: “His mother was extremely surprised that he had got into trouble.

“He is an ordinarily law-abiding young lad.

“He said that he didn’t know why he did it and it is something that he doesn’t want to do again.

“I don’t think you can expect him to be before the courts again.”

Alan Payne, chairman of the bench, ordered him to pay £40 prosecution costs, a £20 victim surcharge.

He was also handed a four-month referral order and given six points on his licence.
