RESIDENTS are encouraged to sign up to a scheme that could help them save money as the deadline is extended.

The Essex County Council energy switch scheme run in partnership with iChoosr and supported by local councils is aimed at bringing large groups of residents together to switch energy providers in order to save money.

The scheme includes tenants and customers on pre-payment meters. There is no cost to register and there is no cost to switch.

Anthony Hedley, Basildon Council’s cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: “We want to do what we can to help residents and businesses keep their energy costs as low as possible against rising gas and electricity prices.

“Those who took part in the last Essex Energy Switch saved an average of more than £290. We fully support this scheme.”

Residents can find out more and sign up online until March 20 at http://essex.gov.uk/energyswitch
