JASON Demetriou has revealed how scoring his first Southend United goal has lifted a massive weight off his shoulders.

Despite playing on the right hand side of defence, Demetriou puts himself under pressure to get onto the score-sheet.

And he was therefore delighted to hit the back of the net in Tuesday night’s 4-1 win at Peterborough United.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to have scored and it really has lifted a massive weight off my shoulders,” said Demetriou.

“I know right-backs aren’t in the team to score but I’m attack minded and know I should be getting goals due to the positions I’m getting in.

“I’ve always chipped in with a few goals during my career as well and the lads have been getting onto me about it too so I was really happy to finally get one.”

Demetriou opened his account by heading home a deflected shot from Marc-Antoine Fortune at London Road but the goal arrived in uncertain circumstances.

Posh insisted the 29-year-old’s effort had not crossed the line while both Simon Cox and Fortune were both credited with the goal before it was eventually awarded to Demetriou.

“At the time I thought the ball had definitely bounced over the line and that’s why I celebrated straight away,” said Demetriou.

“It’s harder to tell when you watch it back but it’s definitely my goal.

“The stadium announcer said it was Coxy but he was further back and it’s been given to Marco elsewhere but someone needs to have a word because it’s definitely my goal.

“After waiting this long, there’s no way anyone else is going to get credited with it!”

Demetriou’s goal came in his 32nd game for the Shrimpers.

And he is now keen to secure more success at Gillingham on Saturday, where Blues are again expected to be backed by a large contingent of travelling supporters.

“The fans were brilliant on Tuesday and I’m sure they will travel in good numbers to Gillingham too so we’re all really looking forward to the game,” said Demetriou.

“When you run out and see the away end so full up it really gives you a buzz and the boys were all mentioning in the warm up on Tuesday how many of our fans were there.

“Hopefully Saturday will be similar and we can get the win.”
