BABIES were given a few tips on how to speak their first words at a special event at the Blenheim Children’s Centre in Leigh.

Makaton for Babies is a course which is run by Family Action in partnership with Southend Adult Community College.

Makaton is a language development programme which uses standardised signs, symbols and speech, utilising British sign language as the basis for the signs.

The course supports babies with their speech development by giving them another way to make themselves understood and to understand others, regardless of whether the baby is having difficulties or not.

Parents are encouraged to really focus on their babies, to make eye contact, turn taking in conversations and using gestures to enhance the communication.

Caroline Reynolds, centre manager, said: “Babies and their parents or carers really enjoy this interactive session together, learning and sharing their new skills in a supportive group environment.

“The course combines practical activities alongside short DVD clips, a book and handouts that parents can take away with them.

That enables them to practice what they have learnt at home with their babies and enjoy the experience together.”
