NUISANCE riders have been warned their bikes could be seized after causing havoc on the seafront.

Three Section 59 warnings were handed out by officers after they were called to Canvey seawall on Sunday. The bikers were found to be using the bikes antisocially close to Roscommon Way and Canvey Wick nature reserve - which have both been hit by persistent offenders.

In a separate incident, a motorbike was found burnt-out at Thorney Bay, on the top path new the seawall.

The warnings can be handed out to caught riding mechanically propelled vehicles in an antisocial manner, either on or off road. Bikers caught by police again within a year could face prosecution and have their vehicles seized.

Dave Blackwell, leader of the Canvey Independent Party, has long called for tough action against nuisance bikers terrorising the island.

He said: “Nuisance motorbikes are a common occurrence on the island.

“People have been complaining constantly.

“I live at the other end, but people are still along over the seawall on their bikes.

“It is noisy and is dangerous as well if people are trying to walk.

“I am pleased they have warned them, but it is getting to a stage where you feel they need to do more to stop them.”

He believes the closure of Action Park, at Bonville Farm, off the A127, in Wickford, has increased the problem.

Friends of Concord Beach volunteers were alerted on Sunday to the burnt-out motorbike, which had been left at the western end of Thorney Bay.

Volunteers quickly set to work clearing smoke damage from the wall while the rest of the debris from the blaze was removed.

This is the second time in the last week that arsonists have struck on the seawall, ruining the hard work of dedicated volunteers.

On Wednesday, mindless vandals set fire to bins that had been installed at Concord Beach by the group of volunteers and also scribbled offensive graffiti on the walls.

The vandalism was quickly cleaned up by the volunteers.
