SPORTS stars at a Basildon school have been crowned County Basketball Champions thanks to a fantastic unbeaten record.

Woodlands School, in Woodlands Approach, beat Shenfield High School 47-43 in the U12 Essex Cup Basketball final.

Woodlands went into the game as favourites as they had previously beaten Shenfield in the group stage and are yet to lose a game all season.

Despite Shenfield leading for a lot of the game and scores tying before the final quarter, the Basildon girls eventually came out on top.

This is the first time that the school has ever won a county basketball title.

The team are hoping for plenty more to come, starting with the Year Eight girls playing in the U13 Essex Cup basketball final this Thursday against Mayflower High School, in Billericay.

The group of Year 7 girls are heading to Leicester on Monday for the Junior NBA finals tournament.

The girls train three times a week and five of the players in the squad are on the basketball elite player development programme at the school, which is coached by teacher James Gardner.

The programme features three sessions a week, two before school and one after school.
