A MAN has been charged with making a hoax bomb threat to a mosque just hours after an Islamist terror attack on Westminster that left five people dead and dozens injured.

Leaders at Southend Mosque, in West Road, Westcliff, were warned about the threat on Wednesday after a man called police, but the premises was not evacuated.

The call was made shortly after terrorist Khalid Masood ploughed into tourists and schoolchildren on Westminster Bridge, before stabbing PC Keith Palmer to death in the grounds of the Palace of Westminster.

The man has been charged and is due to appear at Southend Magistrates’ Court today.

Det Supt Kevin Baldwin, of the south local policing area, said the incident was dealt with swiftly by officers.

He said: “We had a bomb hoax on the day of the attack. A male was arrested that evening. The premises that it was about was a mosque in Westcliff.

“The mosque wasn’t evacuated, it was clearly a hoax-type call from the outset. The people there were spoken to.”

He added: “We have not seen any significant rise in hate crime or any other offences connected with events in London.”
