A PRIMARY school has been given a double-decker bus...and hopes to convert it into a library.

Richmond Avenue Primary School, Shoebury, is now appealing to the community for help in converting the vehicle.

It was donated by Arriva Southend to help out with the limited space the school has to deal with.

The bus arrived yesterday and the school is now looking for skilled volunteers to help complete the planned conversion.

Headteacher Debbie Hughes said: “We have to constantly adjust to the child of today!

“Reading, for some, is not a regular activity they choose when at home. The teachers and staff at Richmond Avenue are constantly thinking of new ideas and approaches to encourage children to develop a love of reading and learning.”

Ms Hughes told how the school was first built in 1903, adding: “Although many alterations have taken place, space is limited and the bus will allow the children to access books easily and enable them to complete project work in an interesting environment.

“Richmond, along with all the Southend schools, are facing severe budget cuts over the next few years. This means that the conversion is reliant on the goodwill of staff, parents, governors and community volunteers to ensure that the children get a library to be proud of.”

Anthony Comber, general manager of Arriva Southend added: “We like to give back to the community. Having had a conversation with Debbie Hughes, the opportunity arose to do the right thing and help Richmond achieve its dream!”
