SOUTHEND Council is searching for the borough’s longest-serving resident as part of its 125th anniversary celebrations.

The seafront, Shoebury Garrison, Southend Pier and Adventure Island are all being highlighted as the most iconic landmarks - but the council is now turning its attention to the people who live in the borough.

A summer of celebrations has been organised to show off what Southend has to offer as it marks 125 years as a borough.

Veteran David Hadjicosta has lived within the same two-mile radius for his whole life.

The 53-year-old, of Thorpedene Gardens, in Shoebury, shared his favourite memories of the town.

He said: “I love the seafront, love walking along the coast, the sea breeze and the cockleshells.

“Southend is a great vibrant area and I don’t ever want to live anywhere else.

“With the Shoebury poppy display and the investment coming into the town, the area really is up and coming.

“I can remember the 22 bus that I used to get down York Road into town. York Road market used to be great, I loved going down there. I loved going and talking to the traders, many of whom served in the Second World War. It was great to listen to their stories.”

Mr Hadjicosta went on to serve as a Gunner in the Royal Artillery.

He added: “My dad used to run a guest house on the seafront and one of my fondest memories is of a woman who had saved the whole year to bring her three kids to Southend for the night.

“My dad landed up giving her a free room for the whole weekend, free food and even some pocket money for the kids. I will never forget the look on the children’s faces.

“They had met Southend kindness and Southend hospitality.”

Ann Holland, councillor for culture, tourism and the economy, has urged for support.

She said: “We would love to hear from residents who currently live or have lived in the borough for a long time, and who would be willing to share their years of memories and stories with us and the Echo.

“They would be also be invited to attend the special civic ceremony being planned on Charter Day on Tuesday, September 19 and to the Silk River event taking place on the Pier on Sunday, September 24.” To share your stories, email robyn.pierce@nqe.com, call 01268 469294 or email media@southend.gov.uk
