A BRANCH of the Royal British Legion has raised £27,741 towards the annual Poppy Appeal.

The Canvey branch of the charity worked tirelessly over the “poppy season”, which started two weeks before November 11 and Remembrance Day.

Twelve volunteers joined in to help sell poppies to the public but they were also joined by special guests during the weeks leading up to November 11.

Poppy Appeal organiser and branch secretary Angie Wynn, 72, from Canvey, was delighted to reveal the amount, which was raised between the start of the appeal last year until March.

She said: “We are really pleased with the amount raised.

“We sold poppies in the Morrisons and the Sainsbury’s on Canvey.

“We were joined by the 2016 mayor of Canvey, Martin Tucker, who volunteered for a bit there with us.

“We were also joined by Rev David Tudor and Conservative candidate for Castle Point Rebecca Harris has always been very supportive of us.”

Mrs Wynn added: “I would like to thank all the residents of Canvey Island for their support and look forward to their support in 2017.”

The charity is now preparing for this year’s Poppy Appeal.
