A CAR, truck and trailer became stuck after falling down a pothole...sparking calls for urgent repairs to be carried out.

The hole, thought to be about 30cms deep, is on the single track road Bassenthwaite Road, in Benfleet.

The truck was so deeply wedged it had to be pulled out by a passing lorry, prompting residents to call for action to be taken.

The pothole is often filled with water, masking how deep it is to innocent motorists.

Mollie Savage, 20, from Canvey, who regular uses the road, said: “A brand new Ford Fiesta went down it and someone’s trailer which they were towing.

“Earlier this week, a lorry went down it and had to be recovered by a big Canute truck.

“It’s so dangerous as you can’t see it.

“You pull in there to let other cars go past as it is quite a narrow road.

“There’s one double the size of this on the other side of the road as well.

“It has got to be well over 30cm deep - a quarter of the lorry tyre went down it.”

She wants urgent action to be taken to sort out the hole, which she believes was dug to help prevent flooding.

However, since then it has been left and - due to the rain water - has got bigger.

Mollie added: “I walk past it with my horse and drive past it everyday.

“I sometimes have to stop to let another car pass it always worries me that I’m going to hear a crunch.

“I’d be very unhappy if my horse went down it.

“It needs to be filled in before any more cars go down it and costs people money or even worse a person or an animal.”

A spokesman for the Essex Highways told the Echo the road is privately owned - meaning it is not Essex County Council’s responsibility to repair the pothole. He would not give details about the owner.
