FIFTEEN people have completed training in how to become hate crime ambassadors thanks to a grant from the police and crime commissioner.

Roger Hirst gave £5,800 to Sgt Gina Denham, who set up the Transpire support network for the transgender community, towards tackling hate crime.

The 15 people have now become hate crime ambassadors after receiving training at Southend Police Station.

Ms Denham said: “It went really well.

“This is a good start but we want to have a lot more hate crime ambassadors - in Harlow there are over 200.

“We are hoping to have more sessions.”

The training will help the ambassadors raise awareness of what hate crime is and encourage victims to report incidents to the police or partner agencies across Essex.

Ms Denham, who was born male and now lives as a woman, hopes that Essex Police will be able to understand the problem of hate crime and respond accordingly if more incidents are reported.
