CONCERNED residents have told how they hope Southend Council does the “right thing” and make sure Leigh’s Grand Hotel is successfully redeveloped – and saved from being consigned to history.

The Echo revealed yesterday how businessman Mick Norcross was growing increasingly frustrated at the time it is taking to get a plan approved to save the beautiful old building off Leigh’s Broadway.

These fears and frustrations have been echoed by readers who want to see new life breathed into the structure – before it’s too late.

Many people can’t understand why Mr Norcross, 54, is encountering so many problems with the flats part of his latest plan.

Michael Shepperd, 44, of Rectory Grove, Leigh, said: “It’s only 19 flats. I can’t see what the problem is.

“The council is approving plans like there is no tomorrow in every other part of Leigh, yet here’s the chance to save such an important part of our community and there seems to be an almighty fuss made over just a handful of flats. The council must do the right thing here.” The proposals from the former TV star include a ground floor restaurant and terrace, a basement wine bar and health club, plus the 19 self-contained flats on three floors, as well as a penthouse roof extension.

This is the third time he has submitted plans

Sarah Simpson, 34, of Leigh Hall Road, Leigh, added: “I get it’s a big development, and time has to be taken to get it right.

“But I’ve been following this story and Mick is so committed, after all he’s bought the site now and since he’s has been back and forth, back and forth with the council and he’s got the site ready.

“Something’s got to happen before it’s too late.”

Councillor Carol Mulroney, said she was “worried” by Mr Norcross’s latest statement and said she couldn’t comment any further as she is part of the council’s development control committee who will decide on the application next month.
