COUNCILLORS fear a former pub could become an eyesore and a magnet for vandals after arsonists targeted it in the wake of developers pulling out of plans to convert it into flats.

Redab Properties have given up on plans to demolish the derelict Esplanade pub in Western Esplanade, Southend.

On Sunday night, fire crews were called to put out a blaze in a first floor room at the property. Although it was extinguished by about 10.45pm, meaning damage was limited, investigators ruled the fire was started deliberately.

Milton ward councillor Julian Ware-Lane believes the site could be regularly targeted.

He said: “I was never keen on the idea of having a block of flats at that site, but I’m less keen on the idea of a run-down derelict former pub starting to attract all sorts of vandalism and other issues and being generally unsightly.

“It’s bang in the heart of the beautiful cliffs, it isn’t far from the pier and Adventure Island, so it’s right in the prime tourist sector.

“I am disappointed that the developers have cited planning issues. The planning law certainly hasn’t changed in the last few weeks. I don’t understand what the issues are.

“I hope that if they are not coming back then we can find other willing developers.”

Fellow councillor Jonathan Garston said: “It’s obviously terrible news in terms of the fire. What’s essential is working with the owners to make sure it is properly secured.

“I have worked with fire officers in the past, so I will work with officers to make sure they have a word with owners to be absolutely sure it’s safe and secure.”
