BASILDON Council is offering to find temporary accommodation in the town for those made homeless by the Grenfell Tower fire.

About 180 families were made homeless after the devastating blaze which killed 79 people.

Cllr Gavin Callaghan, Basildon Council’s Chairman of Policy and Resources Committee, has written to the leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council to offer support following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

He wrote: “On behalf of people across the whole of the Basildon Borough we send our heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost loved ones and their homes."

Mr Callaghan, with agreement from the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Housing and Community Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee, goes on to say he has asked Basildon Council officers to contact their counterparts in Kensington and Chelsea to offer any support they can, including finding any temporary accommodation that may be available for those affected by the fire.

He also notes the help and support for victims’ families and friends that Basildon and Billericay Street Pastors have been providing in the local area close to Grenfell Tower.
