The relocation of the Felmores bail hostel has been put centre stage by Basildon Council’s new Policy and Resources Committee.

Meeting for the first time last night the committee agreed to bring forward a report to consider a feasibility study for the relocation of the bail hostel.

The placing of the bail hostel, close to Northlands Park Primary School, Felmore Primary School and Briscoe Primary School and Nursey, as well as Northlands Park, has been a controversial topic for many years.

Previous attempts have been made to move the bail hostel, which houses sex offenders and other dangerous criminals, to another location.

Policy and resources committee chairman councillor Gavin Callaghan said: "While the decision for the relocation of the hostel is ultimately the responsibility of the National Probation Service and Secretary of State, I want to see the council doing all it can to facilitate a move and working with partners to reach an outcome that is better for Basildon.

“It is clear to the committee that more can and should be done to search for a more suitable site for the Hostel.

"The first task is to identify a suitable location for a replacement facility, away from heavily residential areas, parks and out of the Felmores estate.

"This proposal will then be presented to the National Probation Service.

“I'm delighted that the committee voted last night to ensure that this is a major focus for the committee over the coming months.”
