INTREPID swimmers pulled out all the stops at the county finals at Basildon’s Sporting Village.

The 32 pupils from Buttsbury Junior School, in Norsey View Drive, Billericay, had to win two earlier rounds to qualify for the competition - including competing against other primary schools in the town.

The children had trained hard for the event, with the support of Elites Swim School - which runs coaching sessions across Basildon and Billericay. Mayflower High School, in nearby Stock Road, also played a role by enabling Buttsbury to use its swimming pool.

A spokesman for Buttsbury Junior School said: “The pupils were naturally very excited to be participating in such an illustrious event.

“The standard of the competition was exceptionally high, with the best teams from across the county participating.

“The Buttsbury team pulled out all stops, to win 12 individual golds, 18 individual silvers and three individual bronzes, as well as all 8 freestyle relays, which meant that, over all, both teams had scooped the county titles. This was a first for the school.

“It was a record-breaking day for Buttsbury and one which will be remembered for years to come.”
