A BID buy a Leigh pub and run it for the community is being backed by thousands of residents.

A website and Facebook group, The Grand Again Leigh-on-Sea was launched after Mick Norcross, owner of the Grand Hotel in the Broadway said he was selling the site after his plans were turned down by Southend Council.

However, the former Only Way is Essex star, 54, has since said he is determined to realise his dream after all and plans to resubmit a revised application.

Meanwhile, Richard Longstaff, one of those behind the campaign, said: “We are going from strength to strength with 2,000 followers on our Facebook page and 950 subscribers to our website. We’ve followed Mick Norcross’s application and we’re there to offer a plan B.”

Mr Norcross wants to transform the crumbling pub into flats, a restaurant and gym, but councillors objected to the penthouse on top of the historic building.

Mr Norcross is now resubmitting the plans without the penthouse in his latest attempt get the go-ahead for the multi-million pound scheme.

The change of heart hasn’t deterred the campaigners however, who are out and about delivering leaflets for their cause - and waiting in the wings just in case.

Mr Longstaff added: “The pub closed nine years ago and Mick has had it for five years. We all live within a minute of the pub and we just want our Grand back.

“It is at the heart of our community. We’ve had a big team out leaf-letting and putting posters in shops.

“This has opened up a real Pandora’s Box in the community. It’s really got the community engaged like never before.

“If Mick Norcross decides to sell, we’ll be there.” However, it is not clear how the group will raise funds - it would cost at least £6million to buy.
