NINETY dogs went head-to-head as they competed to be crowned the best in south Essex.

Hundreds of people turned out to watch the first ever Fun Dog Show at Barling Wildlife Reserve, off Mucking Hall Road, which was organised by Barling Magna Parish Council.

Judging classes included waggiest tail, best veteran, most unusual trick, scruffiest dog and best fancy dress.

Parish councillor Shaun Bond, 54, said: “After all the red tape and health and safety bits were ties up we set a date and went for it.

“We weren’t sure whether we were going to get two dogs or 100 turn up, but we actually ended up with 90 dogs participating.”

Famous performing Staffordshire bull terrier Ziggy Trixx even made an appearance. The three-year-old his owner Adem Basharan are currently entertaining shoppers in Southend High Street with a variety of tricks this summer - including skateboarding.

There was face painting, demonstrations and stalls to entertain guests. Mr Bond said the event proved a huge success.

He added: “Initially the idea was just to bring the community together and show them we can do things.

“Now people keep asking when the next one is.

“We made about £500 but that wasn’t what we set out for.

“People donated raffles prizes and we had a little cafe set up.”
