A SENIOR councillor has denied causing another man actual bodily harm.

Tony Cox, ward councillor for West Shoebury and Southend Council’s member for transport, waste and regulatory services, appeared at Basildon Crown Court on Friday.

The 29-year-old previously made a brief appearance at Southend Magistrates’ Court where he denied causing Jamie Waterfield actual bodily harm in Southend on May 20.

As the offence can be tried either in the magistrates’ court or by a crown court jury, he was given the opportunity to choose and elected trial by jury.

He was arraigned on the charge and entered a not guilty plea.

Mr Cox, of West Road, Shoebury, has not been suspended from his council role and fully maintains his innocence. He will stand trial at the court in the week beginning November 13.

Council leader John Lamb previously backed Mr Cox. He said: "I am aware of this incident and the charges brought against Tony, and I have spoken to him to offer my support at this time. It would be inappropriate to comment any further ahead of the court case.”
