THE third lane of the A130 will remain closed for the time being - despite work to construct the lane taking place a year ago.

The dual carriageway was widened between Howe Green and the Rettendon Turnpike to incorporate three lanes in August last year.

It was only due to take four months, but a routine inspection revealed issues with crash barriers along the route.

The third lane has remained cordoned off in both directions, to the frustration of commuters who get stuck in long queues every day as they attempt to get to and from the A12.

Essex County Council has said it is working to get the extra lane in use as quickly as possible and is in constant communication with CountyRoute, the firm that runs the A130 on behalf of the council.

Ian Grundy, Essex County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We are aware the third lane has been coned off for some time and that this can be a frustrating sight for motorists. But we must put safety first and it is vital that this work is done before the lane can open.

“We are working with CountyRoute to ensure the new lane opens as quickly as possible. The arrangement we have in place with CountyRoute means that these works will not cost council taxpayers a penny.”

The road is used by about 50,000 motorists every day.

Frustrated commuter Sarah Saunders, 26, who commutes into Basildon, said: “Every day I see cars queued up as they try to get onto the A12 from the Basildon direction.

“It is a joke.

“The queue can sometimes stretch back almost to the junction for the A132.

“I have also been stuck in the evening on that section and it is so frustrating to see the empty lane right next to you.

“I am surprised I haven’t seen many people drive on it anyway, despite the cones - they aren’t the most permanent of barriers.

“It is laughable that this has gone on for so long - they need to find a solution fast.

“When there was a bad accident on the A130 a little while ago we were allowed to drive on it to get round that, so why can’t they just open it?”
