A FAMILY are devastated after torrential rain poured inside their home causing serious damage.

Chloe Manning, who lives with her mum, Kelly, 39,and siblings who are 17, 11 and 12, in Nevendon Road, Wickford, frantically called the fire service after water levels started rising outside their door.

However, due to a number of other properties and roads being flooded, firefighters was unable to reach them unless there was a risk to life.

In desperation, they placed a mattress at the door.

Chloe, 22, said: “The level outside was rising and rising.

“The fire service said to call again when it had reached socket level.

“They advised we get sandbags to stop the water coming into the house.

“I got a foam mattress and put that at the door, but it didn’t stop the water coming in.”

Despite the family using buckets to try to remove the water from outside the house, their efforts proved fruitless against the onslaught of water.

The family used blankets, towels and even duvets as they tried to get the water out of the house as the water continued to come in.

The level quickly rose inside the house, reaching the plug sockets and causing a power cut.

The water reached over their ankles inside in the deepest parts.

Chloe said: “Knowing we could do nothing about it was the worst.

“We were trying to shovel the water outside onto the grass, but we just had to wait for it to stop.”

Once the water had got as high as the sockets, they called the fire service once again as they had been told to do, asking them to come and help get rid of the water.

A fire engine arrived just after 8pm on Wednesday, and crews used specialist vacuum and pumping equipment to remove the water.

Crews worked for three hours.

Chloe added: “They said it was the worst flooding they had seen.

“The wooden floor has holes in it, the dishwasher and oven have been damaged by the water and come on and off, our quilts have been ruined and the skirting boards are damaged.”

Their sofa has also been damaged by the water.

The family has launched a fundraising page to help them recoup some of the costs that will be involved with repairing the damage and replacing the damage incidents.

Sadly, the family’s insurance had been cancelled just weeks before after a payment was missed and so they are not covered for the damage.

The house previously flooded nine years ago, but thankfully the insurance paid for the drying out, damage and replacing the ruined items.

A spokesman for the fire service confirmed they had attended the incident.
