DRIVING instructors in south Essex have welcomed the news that learner drivers will gain vital experience on motorways before they take their test.

The change was confirmed by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling and aims to curb the number of younger drivers being killed or seriously injured on motorways.

The law will become active next year when learners will be permitted on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual control car.

Graham Kite, from Kite’s Driving School in Lenham Way, Basildon, has been an instructor for 16 years and he believed learners can really benefit.

He said: “I think it’s a good idea and I look forward to it. The motorways can be daunting so it would be nice to have previous experience before driving on them.

“The motorways can be scary for a learner and to go straight out there isn’t the best way.”

He added: “When learners pass their test they ask me for motorway tuition. But with the new change, they can save money.”

Andy, from Andy’s Driving School on Ringwood Drive, Southend, also welcomed the new law but pointed out a potential flaw.

He said: “I do see a possible hiccup for those who live far away from the motorways. It would be hard for them to arrange lessons.

“Overall I do think it’s a good idea because it’s a way to gauge younger drivers on their driving ability before driving on the motorways. Motorways, for them, can be quite scary.” Sarah Hayes, 35, from Gainsborough Westcliff, has been a learner for six weeks. She is pleased the new change is being brought in and believes it can help drivers build up their confidence on the road.

She added: “I don’t believe learners should go on the motorways straight away as they should gain enough confidence on A roads first. But I do think it’s very beneficial for learners to get the experience with a professional instructor.

“I don’t think you should drive on any main roads without at least having a good few lesson with an instructor.

“The thought of driving on a motorway petrifies me so I would love to be able to drive on a motorway with my instructor who has the experience. I think it will be less scary and stressful if it became part of the driving test.”
