A FOUR-storey building comprising a shop and 14 flats could be built in Southend.

A planning application has been submitted to Southend Council by DAP Architecture on behalf of Southchurch Holdings Ltd to demolish the existing building at 636 Southchurch Road, and replace it with the new building.

The brownfield site is currently occupied by Marshall Bull Ceramic Tiling with empty office space above.

The proposals are for four one bed apartments for two people, six two bedroom homes for four people, two two-bedroom duplex apartments for four people and two three bedroom flats for five people.

It is unclear what the ground floor commercial unit could be at this stage.

Planning documents read: “The proposed development will make an important contribution to the rejuvenation of the current site and immediate surrounding area, especially in relation to providing good quality residential accommodation and enhance support for local goods and services.

“The proposed development makes efficient use of a brownfield site, location within a very sustainable location nearby local amenities and public transport links.”

The document adds: “The thrust of national and local planning policy encourages efficient use of previously developed land within sustainable locations, such as this.

“This site provides a great opportunity to provide a high quality mixed-use development with increased visual interest, forming a direct response to the sie and suitable in relation to planning guidance.”

The developers say the proposal is aimed at providing suitable housing to meet the demand of those seeking to live within this area of Southend.

They add: “The commercial ground flood aims to provide local goods and services to the neighbouring community and the new residents of the development.

“The contemporary high quality design will enhance the appearance of the street-scenes and identity of the local area.

“This has been achieved by responding sensitively to the scale, form and massing of the surrounding context.”

There will be 14 parking spaces provided.
