The Canvey Get Set Youth Project was launched yesterday in a bid to encourage young people to become more active.

The project was launched at the ever-popular Waterside Skate Park, in Sommes Avenue, and it was officiated by councillor Ray Howard of the Canvey Island West ward.

The launch was also attended by supporters and organisers of the project, including Yellow Door, Castle Point councillors, and Active Essex Foundation which is supported by Essex County Council.

Mr Howard said: “I was delighted to be at the launch and I would like to pay tribute to everyone who had made this possible.

“The skate park is one of the largest skate parks across the country. It will host a series of events and activities to support our young people, to help them be more active and have access to sporting facilities.

“I am pleased to say we have funding for the project for the next two years which will enable the youth services to promote public health.”

Mr Howard added he has worked hard over the years to maintain one of Canvey’s biggest assets.

He added: “This fabulous skateboard park has been open for more than 15 years. We had some health and safety problems with it before. But it was re-opened a year ago with the support of Essex County Council.”

Nicola Brown, Public Health Improvement Officer for Castle Point Council, said: “As part of the Canvey Get Set Youth Project, youth services will have a youth bus once a week, providing young people with information on keeping safe from alcohol and drugs.”

Ms Brown added young people can also use the skate park for outdoor activities such as BMX bike riding. Representatives from organisations that supported the project are all absolutely delighted the initiative has been realised.

Alex Dobson, manager of Yellow Door, said: “The Canvey Get Set Youth Project will be active through out the year to support our youth.

“I look forward to all the events taking place throughout the year.”

Councillor Tom Skipp, cabinet member responsible for environment and leisure said: “I am very happy to support this event and I’m pleased to support Yellow Door and other partners and volunteers in this project.”

Independent councillor Peter May, from the Canvey Island Central ward, said: “This is a great project for the young generation to enjoy. There are a range of activities for them to enjoy. It’s nice to see all the authorities working together.”

The park was given a £200,000 upgrade last year to improve its structure after Castle Point Council revealed some parts of the park were corroding.
