There have been yet more demands for a third road to be introduced into Canvey to help cope with the rapidly increasing number of vehicles using the current network.

Canvey currently only has two main roads onto the island but calls for a third have been ongoing for several years.

The two roads that are currently used to access the island are Canvey Way and Canvey Road.

The former only consists of one lane either way, while the latter has traffic from Benfleet train station to contend with.

Castle Point councillor, Ray Howard, has once again called for an extra access point to be developed, particularly with schools returning from the summer holidays.

He said: “We are absolutely all for an extra road being built.

“We are gridlocked on the island during rush hour and that’s coming onto the island and going home.

“I know for a fact that the majority of the public want it because they are the ones who suffer sitting in traffic coming onto and off the island.

“Canvey is very unique like that and it is very difficult, particularly for commuters.

“If there is the slightest mishap or an accident or a broken-down vehicle then the whole place becomes gridlocked and no one needs that.

“It’s hard to see how it wouldn’t be beneficial for everyone involved but it does mean everyone being on board for it.”

Mr Howard went on to say that there is opposition to a further road being introduced.

He added: “Unfortunately we do have a lot of opposition and people who object to the idea of further links into the island.

“Specifically it comes from environmental groups who don’t wish to see more transport flowing onto and through the island.

“We will continue to keep trying and pushing for this to be done and we are 100 per cent committed to it.

“Provided it is sustainable, it would be so beneficial for the island.

“How much would it really cost? I know for a fact it would create hundreds of jobs and would be a great for the future.”

There have been calls for a potential new road to lead up to Wat Tyler park and over Holehaven Creek.

This would be lead past the former Coryton oil refinery and Mr Howard is hopeful that this is where a new road will be introduced in future.

He said: “Along with the rest of the council, I know Rebecca Harris MP is working hard and making sure she is doing all she can to make this happen.

Back in 2015, The Echo ran a poll to see what residents thought of a third road onto Canvey being introduced.

There was an overwhelming response in favour.
