HUNDREDS of people braved the weather to enjoy an annual sailing event on the south Essex coast.

The Old Leigh Regatta welcomed the crowds to the town to witness the maritime event.

The Lions Club of Leigh, with assistance from the Sea Scouts of Old Leigh, staged the event.

There was plenty of entertainment during the event including live music and plenty of stalls.

The visitors did not let the disappointing weather dampen their spirits.

The event included something for everyone as there were boats to marvel at, hook the duck games for the youngsters and families and morris dancers as well.

Tony Prior, 67, one of the organisers, said he was delighted everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

He added: “Before the event we moved some of the stalls and stands about due to the forecast.

“It was windy and we had some rain during the afternoon.

“People did not seem to let the rain bother them at all.

“Everyone that I spoke to said they really enjoyed the event.

“This is the fourth year that we have held the event and the only difference this year was the weather, in previous years we have been blessed with sunshine.

“The volunteers worked so hard at the event, and some of us even worked for 12 hours on the day.”
