A RACIST thug who attacked a shopkeeper has been ordered to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work.

Daniel Barnes, 35, of Keyes Road, Dartford, admitted racially and religiously aggravated assault at the Big News 2 shop in Southend on August 12.

He also admitted damaging a door worth £150.

Barnes was told to pay £250 in compensation, £135 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

A MAN has been charged with threatening a woman, assaulting her and being found in possession of a knife.

James Hornsby, 44, is alleged to have made threats on September 6 before assaulting the woman between August and September. He is also charged with having a knife in Southend on September 6.

Hornsby, of Felixstowe, appeared at Basildon Crown Court to deny the allegations and will appear at Basildon Crown Court on October 5.

A MAN has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

Shane Thorogood, 27, is charged with unlawfully wounding Thomas Maczka in Southend on May 21, 2016.

He appeared at Basildon Magistrates’ Court but did not enter a plea.

Thorogood, of Lindale, High Cheshire, will appear at Basildon Crown Court on October 5.

A REPEAT drink driver has been jailed and banned from driving for more than four years.

Mark Hayes, 44, of Whitefriars Crescent, Westcliff, was caught in his Citroen Picasso near his home on May 16. He was two-and-a-half times the limit.

Southend Magistrates’ Court heard he was already subject to a community order for another drink drive offence.

Hayes admitted the offence and was locked up for two months and banned for four years and one month.

A MAN has been charged with stealing cash and jewellery from an Argos store.

Thomas Enever, 41, is alleged to have entered the staff area of the shop in Basildon and taken items worth £5,739 on September 7.

He is also charged with driving without a licence or insurance in Grays on the same day.

Enever, of Brindles Close, Hutton, will appear at Basildon Crown Court on October 6.
