Students were inspired by a talk from a member of rowing team the Coxless Crew about her epic journey across the Pacific Ocean.

Natalia Cohen attended the Deanes Annual Awards Evening at the school in Daws Heath Road, Thundersley.

Ms Cohen gave an inspirational speech recalling her contribution to the Coxless Crew, which is a team of six women who rowed, unsupported, for nearly 9,000 miles from San Francisco to Cairns, Australia, in January 2016.

The expedition was expected to take six months but due to unforeseen circumstances, took a staggering nine months to complete. The team set two world records by becoming the first all female team and the first ever fours boat to row unsupported across the Pacific.

Ms Cohen’s key messages to students were to persevere no matter how challenging the task is. She also also said to adopt a positive mindset in whatever they do.

Desi McKeowan, headteacher, said: “We are honoured to have Natalia share her experiences at the Deanes. It is an inspiring story which has enabled our students to reflect on their own values.”
