Travellers set up camp in Tesco car park in Lakeside causing the store to close for the evening.
There were reported to be about 40 caravans in the supermarket car park on Saturday evening which resulted in Tesco closing its doors for the evening whilst the situation was dealt with.
The travellers did eventually begin to leave and by late Sunday morning, they had all gone.
They arrived on the private plot of land between 5pm and 6pm.
The Tesco Extra ended up remaining shut for the remainder of the night but their doors reopened for shoppers after the caravans had moved out of the car park.
The store apologised to the people wishing to use the supermarket but were unable to.
A Tesco spokesman said: “We are aware of caravans in our Lakeside Extra car park without the right to be there.
"This incident did result in the temporary closure of the store for a few hours last night and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience to our customers.
"The store will re-open as normal this morning and we continue to work with the local authorities to resolve the situation.”
