FA Trophy preliminary round
CANVEY Island were brought back down to earth with a bump as they were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Walton Casuals in the FA Trophy.
Ahead of the match, the Gulls were the Isthmian North’s in-form team and were top of the standings.
Walton Casuals had also enjoyed a good start in the Isthmian South, but Canvey took the early initiative in this clash.
Teddy Nesbitt almost got on the end of a flowing move but was unable to turn the ball home from close range.
Mitch Gilbey shot down the throat of Denzel Gerrar in the home goal, but Casuals came even closer to taking the lead.
Josh Kelly was odds on the score from in front of the goal but goalkeeper Henry Newcombe did brilliantly to block the effort.
However, the hosts were to deservedly took a lead into the break -Sean McCormack’s cross was collected by Kelly who scored for Casuals.
Inspired by that goal, Walton Casuals doubled their lead inside 10 minutes of the second-half.
Lartey Sarpong broke through and chipped over Newcombe, as the hosts threatened to run riot.
Sarpong made it 3-0 on the hour mark, after Ashley Dumas had been robbed of the ball, with Canvey needed a period of consolidation.
Sam Collins’ strike was turned around the post, with George Sykes firing over before the end.
But it wasn't to be for Danny Heale's team.
