SOUTHEND MPS and businesses were delighted with the news of the airport’s expansion.

James Duddridge, MP for Rochford and Southend East, said the move would boost the borough’s economy.

He said: “It is good to see the airport growing, bringing more jobs and business to Southend.

“I fully support this extension that will match the existing terminal.

“Not only does the airport provide employment growth in the whole extended Southend area, it helps present the town as a place that is on the up as opposed to some rather old fashioned Seventies comparison with Victorian seaside towns in decline.”

Fellow Conservative Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West said the scheme would make things more comfortable for passengers.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted with the multi-million pound plans to extend the terminal at Southend Airport, the ‘passenger experience’ will be improved even further.

“I welcome new baggage sorting and screening systems.

“This should speed up the process and give passengers more confidence in security arrangements.”

Sir David added: “I am delighted that baggage reclaim facilities will also be improved. There is nothing more frustrating than, having enjoyed a great holiday ,then experiencing an interminable delay in collecting baggage.”

The boost to the local economy was also welcomed by Essex Chamber of Commerce.

David Burch, director of policy, said: “This is something we are very pleased about. It’s obvious that Stobart feels the airport has considerably more potential.

“We very much hope Rochford District Council will grant planning permission so work can start in good time.”

Mr Burch added: “The airport expansion creates potential for new jobs and in terms of companies based there, it secures those jobs as well.

“It will bring more people into Southend to see what here is to offer in term s of visitor experience and improved facilities for business development particularly with the growth of the airport business park.”
