IT is important that West Ham United full back Aaron Cresswell takes his positive display on his full England debut into the upcoming Premier League fixtures.

Cresswell featured from the start in the Three Lions’ 1-0 win over Lithuania, and was one of the away side’s better players.

The Hammer made impressive runs which caused the Lithuanian defence dilemmas, while he also put various dangerous crosses into the penalty area.

And Cresswell even came close to netting his first goal in international football, when he headed a Jordan Henderson cross goalwards, but was thwarted.

The former Ipswich Town defender has failed to show his best form for West Ham so far this season, but his performance was certainly a step in the right direction.

Arthur Masuaku was chosen ahead of Cresswell for the opening clash of the campaign at Manchester United.

And two assists and one goal in Masuaku’s last three appearances for the Hammers has resulted in some Hammers fans calling for the ex-Olympiakos left back to replace Cresswell in the starting line-up.

But Cresswell will now be looking to build on his first England start, which should also have given him a boost in confidence.

Cresswell was involved at left wing-back as England boss Gareth Southgate opted for a 3-4-2-1 formation in Lithuania - a formation Hammers manager Slaven Bilic has tried on various occasions.

And Bilic will now know that Cresswell is more than capable of being deployed in that formation.

In fact, Cresswell may actually be better in that system rather than a flat back four as he can be dangerous going forward.

West Ham’s Premier League season resumes with a trip to Burnley on Saturday and Cresswell will be looking to make an impact.
