Fed-up residents are calling for action after commuters are continually clogging up their road and blocking driveways.

People living in Farnham Avenue and Penrith Crescent, Wickford, have been left frustrated by commuters using Wickford railway station using their private roads as a car park.

They say that emergency services are unable to get through to people’s homes.

Councillor Peter Holliman, representing Wickford North, has joined residents in their calls for parking restrictions to be installed.

He said: “The roads are narrow, because at no point was the road designed for parking.

“The residents all have driveways and plenty of space for parking, but commuters are completely disregarding them.

“They are parking across driveways, they are blocking access, quite frankly it is stupid.

“And then there is emergency services, an ambulance of fire engine would struggle.”

Some 152 homes were built on the land north of Station Avenue after gaining planning permission in 2010.

Mr Holliman admitted the roads are very narrow, due to never being designed with onstreet parking in mind.

The councillor was first contacted last August, but believes the issue has been ongoing since the homes were built.

Mr Holliman added: “Residents themselves have written umpteen letters and I have been involved for over a year now.

“I do feel really sorry for the residents, in a couple of instances we have had commuters blocking a driveway at 6am, and then still being there over 12 hours later.

“It is dragging out and it is ridiculous.”

Mr Holliman has been told the Essex County Council’s highways department is willing to put restrictions in place, but have been unable to as of yet with the developer Avant Homes delaying the transfer of the land.

A spokesperson for Avant Homes said. “We are aware of residents’ concerns and are in ongoing discussions with Essex County Council to agree a resolution.”
