The site of a Leigh gym could be turned into a new housing development.

Stone Me have submitted a planning application to build one and four bedroom houses on the site in Pall Mall, Leigh.

The plan would see the current 445sq m building demolished and replaced with “much-needed” family homes.

The application is a revised plan after the initial submission was refused.

An application was made in 2016 to demolish the gym and build a terrace of three and four bedroom properties. The council refused permission. It was taken to appeal and later dismissed due to inadequate parking.

The new scheme now provides two parking spaces for each four bedroom property and single space for the one bedroom property.

In the supporting documents, the applicants have said: “The site provides an opportunity to further deliver regeneration and much-needed housing within the borough and extinguish an inappropriate use close to residential accommodation.”

Since the building was sold in 2005 it has been used as a number of businesses including an auction house and most recently, a gym.

The current occupier has been in contact with the property owners to ask for their lease to be terminated as “it is no longer financially viable to operate.”

Mark Flewitt, councillor for housing, planning and sustainability agrees that there is “definitely” a need for more houses in Southend.

He said: “Any new homes in the area are welcomed subject to the planning rules and the decision of the committee.

“We’re looking for as many good quality homes and locations to meet the need we have for housing in the area. I know the committee will consider this.

“It will be heard by the development control committee, they will adjudicate on the application and come to a decision.”
