Anxious parents have voiced their growing concern about the future of a school in Basildon following a mass resignation of governors and exodus of teachers.

De La Salle School, in Ghyllgrove, lost four governors over the past month and following the shock news, parents now fear that the school, which has excellent results in the past, will suffer.

A parent, who asked not to be named, said: “For some time I have been concerned, but now I am seriously worried. If you look at the results of De La Salle, they are excellent, and I was so happy with the school, but this was down to the hard work of the staff who were there who have now gone. I am really worried.”

Reassuring parents in the wake of the resignations of governors on November 3, Catherine Burnett, headteacher at De La Salle School, said: “Four governors resigned together on November 3 having previously given advance notice of their intentions. This followed a full governing body review of governance.

“We have already secured replacements for the local authority and co-opted positions, and are working with the trustees and the diocese to fill the remaining vacancies. The school is positive about working with a governing body who will continue to support the outstanding achievements of our staff and students.”

Another concerned parent, who also asked not to be named, said: “I have my concerns about these matters but also I have found out and have had confirmed that there was a mass resignation of the governing body of the school. This has left me, and others very concerned about the school’s future under the existing head.”
