The future of Leigh school pupils proved a hot topic at a public consultation after Southend Council invited parents and residents to give their views.

The event was held at the Civic Centre, in Victoria Avenue, where many voiced concern over the proposed changes to the school catchments.

Charlotte Bridgeman, 39, and Eddie Bridgeman, 42, of Dundonald Drive, said: “They are people, little people, not numbers on a spreadsheet. They deserve far more respect and care.

"This affects more than our children and families, it is our sense of community. It will also affect local businesses.

“Leigh Road prides itself on its independent shops, it is where a lot of parents do their shopping on the way to or from school, the changes will affect Leigh Road’s visitor numbers.”

A fellow Dundonald Drive resident, Melissa Calvy, 43, was also angered by the proposal. She said: “Chalkwell schools increased their intake by 15 children per year group, and those 90 places have been filled by children from other schools.

"Now, even if they live out-of-catchment, their siblings will be prioritised over our children. This just does not seem fair.”

A parent who didn’t want to be named but whose child goes to Blenheim School was in favour of the changes.

He said: “We have always been quite far away, and the children can feel pretty isolated, so it’s a good thing something is being done.

"Despite what people say about the process, the children come first.”

Cathy Braun, group manager for school access and inclusion, said: “The main thing is about having reasonable expectations of gaining a place at your catchment school.

"We realise it is an emotive issue but in essence, it is about making sure that children will get a catchment area that is fit for purpose and reflects in the number of school places.”

James Courtenay, councillor for children and learning heard parents’ concerns at a drop-in session at the consultation. He said: “I’m really grateful that some many parents took time out of their busy schedules to come along to find out more information about the proposed changes.”
