A grand finale was celebrated at the Southend Civic Centre as the borough’s Alternative City of Culture came to an end.

The title was thought up by Sir David Amess, Tory MP for Southend West, when the town failed to make the shortlist to be named the UK’s City of Culture.

Sir David organised a programme of events to take place throughout the year, showcasing what the town has to offer.

To celebrate the end of the year of culture, a concert and art exhibition was held on Saturday.

Fresh from their recent success at the London Palladium, David Stanley and the award-winning Music Man Project once again took to the stage to entertain the crowds.

Also performing was a great line-up of artists including the Leigh Orpheus Choir, the Melvin Beddow Big Band, Levent and Taylor and many more unique musical acts.

Sisters seven-year-old Maisy, 12-year-old Gabriella and 16-year-old Lucie Coath entertained crowds with their violin playing.

The concert took place in the council chambers, in Victoria Avenue, Southend.

There was also an exhibition of arts, photography and crafts from noon which visitors were keen to check out.

The exhibition featured a number of local artists and displays from Figure of Eight Education and schools.
