Family and friends have said their farewell to one of the last surviving veterans of the battle of Pegasus Bridge.
Patrick Ronald Turner, known as ‘Topsy’, died on November 8 at 95. He was born on July 22 1922, and at 22 he and fellow troops glided down to capture Pegasus Bridge, Normandy, before dawn, and to prevent German forces crossing the bridge to attack Sword Beach.
His funeral was held yesterday in St Andrew’s Church, Ashingdon.
He had been the verger at the church for many years, and he was much-loved by residents who miss him dearly.
Family and friends have always remembered Topsy as a brave soldier, who never gave up on himself or anyone.
