A Basildon club is at risk of closure after a councillor's son alleged he had been stabbed on a night out.

Unit 7 in Festival Leisure Park could face an urgent licence review by Basildon Council at the request of Mark Ellis, councillor for Laindon Park and Fryerns.

The call for review has come after Mr Ellis' son, Kane, 24, was injured at the club in December last year.

After the incident, He needed 18 stitches on his lower back.

The club insisted CCTV had shown he simply fell on a set of stairs.

Following the denial, Mr Ellis has reportedly filed an application for the review due to his concerns over the prevention of crime and disorder and public safety.

Were the application to be successful, the club could face its licence being revoked.

A consultation is currently underway, which is expected to be complete on February 5.

A spokesman on behalf of Unit 7 said: “We are disappointed by the decision to review our licence.

"Unit 7 is a professionally run business and we are proud of our track record in Basildon, not only providing a great night out for young people, but creating vital jobs and income for the town.

"The safety and enjoyment of our customers is always our main priority and we operate a stringent door policy, which includes searching all customers on entry and re-entry to the venue.

"Further to discussions with the Police and a review of CCTV footage, there is no evidence of a stabbing and we believe that the customer’s injuries were caused by an accident, which should become clear during the hearing.”
