Four Specials from Southend Local Policing Team helped a driver after a wheel fell off his car.

While on duty in Southend last Saturday evening Sc Alex Penn, Acting Sp/Sgt Steven Le Count, Sc Rachel Harris and Sc Simon Webster spotted a driver in distress near the Royals Shopping Centre.

The Specials stopped to help the man quickly realising the wheel had come off his car leaving him in a vulnerable position in the middle of the road. Alex, Steven, Rachel and Simon cordoned off the road to secure the safety of the driver and other road users.

The Specials were informed that the recovery truck was going to be a 90-minute wait. The driver lived nearby and was able to return home for some tools to fix his vehicle while the Specials secured the scene. It wasn’t long before the driver was able to fix his car and returned home safely.

The driver has since been in contact with Alex to thank him and the other specials for their help and valuable time.

Sc Alex Penn from Southend Local Policing Team said: “Not every incident we deal with is a crime, sometimes the public simply need our help after getting stuck in difficult situations.

“It was good to see the man could get safely on his way and even nicer that he got in contact to pass on his thanks.”

The Specials who were involved in this incident volunteer their time to help and protect their local community. If you would like to become a Special Constable, apply on the website: www.essex.police.uk/specials.
