A man has been jailed for six years and three months after stabbing a former friend in an unprovoked attack in Basildon.

Paul Feeney, 44, of Collingwood Terrace, Basildon, was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court yesterday (Friday, February 16) after admitting wounding with intent.

He previously admitted the offence at the same court on Monday, February 5.

On Saturday, September 23, the victim agreed to meet Feeney for a drink at his home.

When he arrived at around 9.30pm, Feeney was heavily intoxicated and during a discussion tried punching the victim but instead lost his balance, fell into a wall and cut his head.

The victim tended to the cut but was suddenly stabbed by Feeney with a kitchen knife in the shoulder and armpit.

The victim ran off and called police who arrested Feeney at the scene.

Investigating officer Dc Aaron Kay, of Basildon CID, said: “Feeney had not seen the victim for a number of years and they agreed to meet and catch up.

“During the conversation, Feeney without warning lashed out at the victim but ended up injuring himself.

“The victim realised Feeney was hurt and tried helping but was stabbed twice in a violent and unprovoked attacked.

“I would like to praise the victim for his courage and bravery during this case, which has resulted in Feeney being locked in a prison cell for a number of years.”
