A WORKMAN had to be saved by firefighters after being electrocuted while working inside the wall of a shop.

The man, aged in his 30s, became trapped while making building alterations within a wall at Ward International mobility shop, Furtherwick Road, Canvey.

The man had climbed into the tight space via the roof, but received a severe electric shock and became trapped.

Neither paramedics or the fire service could get to him, meaning firefighters had to cut through the wall to allow paramedics access. The man was taken to Southend Hospital in an ambulance.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A spokesman for Essex fire service said: “A man had fallen ill after climbing through a roof and inside a wall, firefighters had to cut through the wall to allow paramedics to deal with the casualty.”

A spokesman for the ambulance service confirmed it was hoped the man would fully recover.

He said: “We were called on Friday afternoon to reports that a man had suffered an electric shock.

“Two rapid response vehicles, a community first responder, an ambulance crew, ambulance officer and our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) attended.

“The patient, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to Southend Hospital for further assessment.

“His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.”

At the time of going to print, the incident had not been reported to the Health and Safety Executive, but information can take up to 10 days to process.
