WORK has finally begun on transforming Leigh’s iconic Grand Hotel - despite last-minute bids to derail the restoration.

Diggers were on the site of the hotel, in Leigh Broadway, yesterday as work began to strengthen then main structure before the main building work gets underway.

Businessman Mick Norcross, who is behind the development, said he is as motivated as ever to get the project completed.

He added: “Work has begun, but it is nothing major at this stage.

“It is mostly site set-up and improvement area works before the major building work starts in the next few months.”

The former reality TV star, 54, was left frustrated earlier this month after last-minute attempts to delay the development came to light.

Someone anonymously proposed it should become a listed building.

Historic England has now done a survey and a special report has gone to the Secretary of State.

Mr Norcross may have to seek listed building consent if it gets Grade II listing.

A final decision about its listed building status is expected within the next few months.

However, Mr Norcross is not worried about the process.

In fact, he has had to weather many storms over the last five years while trying to bring the building back into use.

One of the most challenging was when Japanese knotweed was found on part of the site and had to be removed.

This process took several months.

Then a planning application was turned down last year over the size of a penthouse roof, but his dream finally gained approval after he altered the plan.

But now things have started to happen for real.

Mr Norcross said: “It has been some time since we began and it has not been without its obstacles.

“I’m still as motivated as ever.

“I have to be because I have millions invested in it so I have to be fully motivated.

“I have taken great care to preserve the fabulous nature of the building.”
