SAFETY improvements have been suggested at a junction where a motorcyclist died - but councillors believe the plan won’t help.

Council officers looking into a request by councillors for a left-turn only restriction at the junction of Maya Close and Ness Road, Shoebury have said it would not prevent further accidents.

However, they are recommending bringing the junction - where First bus driver Dominique Burrows who was in his 40s lost his life in 2015 - further into Ness Road with “build out” safety measures.

At the moment visibility is reduced for motorists coming out of Maya Close by a bend in the road, and by cars parked outside a newsagents on the corner, often on double yellow lines.

Shoebury ward councillor Roger Hadley, who used to own the newsagents, said: “With this bend you just can’t see what’s coming. If you are turning right you have to guess if something’s coming. Officers have recommended build outs but it won’t help.

“If you turn left out of Maya Close you still have the same problem, but it gives you a bit more time. There’s a few more seconds for people to see you. I always turn left there. “When I was at the shop I saw lots of accidents. There was a three-car pile up there once where a car overturned.

“I am going to argue the case for a left-turn only sign. I feel very strongly about it as do other councillors in the area – it’s the only safe option.”

Tony Cox was one of the councillors who called for the left turn.

He said: “I am aware of the officers’ comments and there are some issues I will be asking officers to see that all the measures have been looked at.”

In their report officers said: “Vehicles exiting left will still require visibility of southbound traffic therefore restricting the movement to left turn only would not prevent future similar accidents.

Consideration is being given to build outs bringing the junction further into Ness Road and preventing illegal parking.
