DOG walkers on Canvey have been slammed again - and this time for flinging bags of dog mess over the sea wall.

Dog mess has proved a hot topic on the island over the last month, with Castle Point Council considering imposing a ban on dogs on beaches during summer months to combat an issue with dog mess.

But it seems the issue spreads much further, with a rowing club discovering ‘hundreds’ of plastic bags of dog mess which had been flung over the seawall.

Members of the Lower Thames Rowing Club took a break from rowing on Sunday to clear an unsightly amount of rubbish which had been thrown over the sea wall.

Adventure rowing captain, Ron Sverdloff, said: “What a “Foolish Days Row”, on April fools day - enjoyed by 13 crew members of the Lower Thames Rowing Club.

“However we British should all be ashamed of ourselves, using (some unnecessary) plastic products and not using the correct recycling system.

“A great deal of it ends up on every bit of our British coastline and spoils not only our green and pleasant land but does far more damage.

“Some dog walkers on Canvey Island are throwing their dog, plastic poo bags over the sea wall.

“Not just the odd one or two, but hundreds.

“At least our little club did their duty-but, still more on our coastline to be done.”

At a meeting two weeks ago, Castle Point’s cabinet agreed to continue pursuing the proposal, which would see dogs banned from the beach during summer months.

If a ban does come into place, it will only begin in the summer of 2019, likely to run from May to September.

The council has confirmed monitoring officers will visit the area tomorrow to assess the situation.

And councillor Ray Howard slammed anyone with the cheek to throw rubbish, and even worse dog mess, over the sea wall.

He said: “That is an absolute disgrace and we cannot continue with this.

“On Canvey we pride ourselves of the good work of countless voluntary groups who make this a wonderful place to live, and do their very best for the area.

“And then we have people who do this, it is not acceptable.

“In my opinion, we should be gathering evidence on anyone who throws rubbish, or anything, over the sea wall, and as a council we should be seeking prosecutions.

“It is irresponsible and is negligence.

“Words fail me in relation to the dog mess, they really do.

“It is a disgrace and I completely condemn those actions.”
