ROUGHLY 50 wraps of Class A drugs were taken off the streets of Canvey in a drugs bust.

Officers from Castle Point’s community policing team apprehended a driver on Northwick Road, Canvey, at 10am on Wednesday morning.

Upon searching the vehicle, they found a large number of wraps in the car, which officers believe were ready to be sold.  Although the contents of the wraps are yet to be tested, Essex Police believe the items seized were Class A drugs.

The driver was arrested at the scene and has been released under investigation.

This is the second major drugs haul on Canvey in just over a week, with officers successful executing a drugs warrant on May 9.

In that instance, officers seized 25 mature cannabis plants along with a large quantity of cannabis that was being dried out, ready for distribution.

And residents have praised the efforts of the police, but raised concerns over the frequency of drug busts on the island.

Ben Morris, 48, of Long Road, said: “Obviously it is great that these drugs are off the streets, but this seems to be becoming all too regular on Canvey.

“It is concerning, I grew up on the island and you would very rarely hear about incidents like this.

“But now it seems all the time.

“I read about the cannabis farm that police found last week, and now this as well. I looked at the picture, and those drugs are ready for distribution so it is fantastic they did not make it on to the streets.

“You have to say well done to the police, because they are obviously having a successful period in terms of stopping drugs on Canvey but it is concerning the frequency we see drug busts like this.”

A spokesman for Castle Point’s community police team, said: “Drugs taken off the streets yesterday after officers stopped a vehicle on Canvey at 10am.

“A drugs search was carried out on the driver and vehicle and all these wraps were found.

“The driver was arrested and taken to Basildon custody for questioning, he was released with bail conditions whilst we complete our investigation.”
